Google Base
Well I sold my Google stock, ticker GOOG at $397.45. Today it broke $400. It may be a coincidence but I think the beta release of Google Base may of had something to do with it. I did my own experiment today to see what all the fuss is about. So far I’m not convinced it’s an Ebay Killer.
Honestly, I see Google base as a new way to spam. I’m sure those search engine optimization guys are already picking the concept to see how they can use it to their advantage. I think from an information standpiont it has legs. However, if people already have their own website, then it’s a less worthwhile concept. I’m sure there will be plenty of people out there who do use Google Base as a way to sell products. I think in that form it’ll serve as a good launching point as another avenue for sellers to reach buyers.
Overall I think the writing is on the wall. Google is more in competition with Yahoo then MSN. If they aren’t slowly evolving into a web portal then I don’t know what is. I’ve already began to use the Customized Google Homepage by adding stock tickers and RSS Feeds. So far it works to my liking, mainly because I don’t have to worry about ads. It’s that ironic, I think the custom google homepage because there aren’t any ads. And the primary source of income for Google is Advertising. Good thing a lot of that revenue is based on traffic from AdSense.
So what happens when everyone starts pulling content from the subjects people like via RSS. Currently RSS doesn’t offer insertion of advertising. Will it? The web is going in a direction where the user controls the content they view. Advertising might have to evolve a little as well. Google as received approval for their WiFi in California. Will internet be free eventually? Not if the cable, advertising, and internet industry has anything to say about it.
Also Google is also working on Google Analytics.
