Dallas Immigration Protests

This photo was taken in Dallas March 29th, 2006. I find it very unfortunate people are protesting about immigration reform and then turn around and place the flag upside down. This isn’t exacly my first thought of how to show support for a country you want to become a legal resident of.

I find it frustrating that many of the students aren’t really informed about the facts about the proposed legislation. To be honest, I’m not either. The news media has been putting so much attention to the events taking place. “Students march in to Dallas City Hall.” Yipee! WHO CARES. Tell us why they are marching, what the legislation proposes and how it will effect current and future people in this country, legal and illegal. My mother was in highschool in Pine Bluff, Ark during the 1957 Central High protests about integrated schools in Little Rock, Ark. There were riots about the “Little Rock Nine”, both for and against. I can’t help to think back and wonder.. did people rioting back then know why? To that I’d say, “Yes”. Do the students today know why they are protesting? I sure hope so, but unfortunately I have my doubts.

Some comments I read on Blog Lubbock bring up many interesting points. We are in a place in history where it’s time for strong latino and hispanic members to organize. I really think the students marching to Dallas City Hall and other city halls is direct evidence that students want direction. I urge latino and hispanic political leaders to step up to the plate and lead. The students are ready.
