Giant Bicycle OCR1

Update 10/2/06: My bike is really a 2006 OCR model. Sorry for the confusion. You can read my updated review here.

It’s official, I’m now a bicyle rider for those long distance road courses. Keni is still getting used to the idea of me in spandex shorts with a padded butt. I think she’ll be ok with my masculinity after a while.

I ended up getting a 2005 Giant OCR1. The set up came as follows:

  • Frame: Giant ALUXX butted-aluminum, Compact Road Design
  • Fork: FormulaOne Carbon w/aluminum steerer
  • Rims/Wheels: Xero XSR-3
  • Hubs: See Rims/Wheels
  • Spokes: See Rims/Wheels
  • Tires: Kenda Kontender
  • Crankset: FSA Gossamer Mega Exo
  • Chainwheel: 50/39/30
  • Front Derailleur: I’ll get back to you, but I know it’s one grade up from 105
  • Rear Derailleur: Shimano 105
  • Rear Cogs: Shimano 105, 10-Speed: 12-27
  • Shifters: Shimano 105
  • Handlebars: Aluminum anatomic
  • Stem: Easton EA30
  • Brake Levers: Shimano 105 STI
  • Brakes: Dual-pivot
  • Pedals: Shimano PD-M505
  • Saddle: WTB Laser V Race
  • Seat Post: Carbon

I went on my first ride yesterday for about 45 minutes to test and adjust my Giant OCR1. I’ve got a little more tweaking to do on the handle bar angle & height, but over I’m very pleases. There’s also a slight sqeek from the carbon fiber seat post when I sit. I’ve read after a few tightenings and some miles the squeek goes away. Being this is my first bike. And I’ve only been on a total of 2.5 actual rides or 45 miles. (I count the tester ride yesterday as .5 of a ride.) I don’t really think my professional opinion has much value. Overall I’m very well pleased with the bike based on the criteria of price, component quality and my riding experience on the Giant OCR1. For the money I couldn’t have gotten a better new bike.
